Makaton International Awareness Day is a celebration of the Makaton Language Programme and its remarkable impact on supporting communication for individuals with learning and communication difficulties. Launched to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Makaton, this special day honors the birthday of the programme’s founder, Margaret Walker, and highlights the power of inclusive communication to bring communities together.

What is Makaton International Awareness Day?

Makaton International Awareness Day takes place annually on 28 August, chosen to mark the birthday of Margaret Walker, one of the creators of the Makaton system. It offers an opportunity for individuals, families, schools, organisations, and communities worldwide to celebrate Makaton—through flag‑flying, garden parties, cake‑baking, and the use of signs and symbols to foster inclusive communication. This day encourages everyone to raise awareness, engage in fun activities, and support those who rely on Makaton every day.

When is Makaton International Awareness Day?

This year, it falls on Thursday, 28 August 2026. Events are planned throughout the day and across the country, often hosted by Makaton tutors, community groups, and organisations committed to inclusive communication.

How to Get Involved

  • Host a Gathering: Organise a Makaton‑inspired garden or house party—decorate with downloadable bunting, flags, and cake wraps available from the official Makaton Charity.
  • Fly the Flag: Display the official Makaton flag to show your support and spark conversation.
  • Learn a Sign or Symbol: Share a new Makaton sign or symbol with friends, colleagues, or classmates on social media or in person.
  • Join an Event: Attend local awareness events—these often include tuition sessions, fun activities, and community meet‑ups for all ages.
  • Share on Social Media: Use relevant hashtags (see below), post photos of your activities, and tag the Makaton Charity to spread the message.

Why It Matters

Makaton empowers people with communication needs—such as those with autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, or other learning disabilities—by combining speech, signs, and symbols. Raising awareness helps promote inclusive communication and encourages more people to learn Makaton, whether in schools, homes, health services, or community organisations.
